Why does childbirth hurt? And how do you deal with it as a parent-to-be?
A natural process with room for freedom of choice
Childbirth is one of the most intense experiences in a woman’s life. Pain is part of it, but why is that? And more importantly: how can you deal with it in a way that suits you? At Verloskundigen PuurBegin we believe in a combination of trust in the body and access to modern resources. Here you can read all about the causes of labor pain and the possibilities to relieve it – both natural and medical.
Nature cooperates: endorphins and the benefits of pain
During labor, your body produces its own painkillers: endorphins. These hormones help to reduce the pain, but only when you are relaxed. Tension or anxiety inhibit the production of these natural painkillers. Labor pain also has a function: it indicates when you need to rest, change position or actively push. It is a signal that labor is progressing and your baby is getting closer.
Natural Ways to Relieve Pain
Relaxation is key. Seek comfort through warmth (a bath, shower or hot water bottle), breathing exercises or a massage from your partner. Also experiment with positions: squatting, on hands and knees or lying on your side with a pillow between your legs. Movement not only promotes dilation, but can also make the pain more bearable.
Medical Pain Management: When Natural Isn't Enough
Sometimes extra support is needed. In the hospital there are several options:
- Epidural: Numbs the lower body and is often described as most effective. However, your baby's condition must be continuously monitored.
- Remifentanil: A powerful painkiller delivered through an infusion pump that you operate yourself. It works quickly, but can cause drowsiness.
- Nitrous oxide: Relaxes and reduces anxiety, but is only available in certain hospitals.
The important thing is that there is no “right” or “wrong” choice. Whether or not you pain relief used, you deserve to be proud of yourself.
The power of mindset and preparation
Fear of pain can intensify the experience, so we recommend that you take a birth plan/birth plan to make. Think about who you want to be present at the birth, take a course in breathing techniques and discuss your wishes with your midwife.
Conclusion: Your birth, your choice
Whether you choose a home birth without medication or for an epidural in the hospital – every path is valuable. At Verloskundigen PuurBegin we support you with advice and personal attention. Because in the end it is all about one thing: a positive memory of the day your child was born.
